Although I don't agree with the gender indoctrination that many teachers undertake in the classroom, I support all subjects being discussed and debated rationally. This means helping students develop logical claims supported by evidence and allowing the best reasoned arguments to prevail. It's the teacher's job to model this behavior when presenting controversial ideas like gender identity.

In the current climate, of course, this ideal approach has been hijacked by classroom ideologues on both the left and right who believe that political activism, rather than informed and civil debate, should be the goal of education. As a teacher who tries to adhere to Aristotle's "Golden Mean" and Voltaire's belief in defending the views of those one disagrees with, I've made enemies on both ends of the political spectrum.

Unfortunately, the greatest backlash has come from those of my own liberal "tribe" who consider any questioning of their ideology apostasy. Nevertheless, it is a worthy struggle, and I remain convinced that reason will eventually prevail as long as enough teachers adhere to the great maxim somewhat erroneously attributed to Aristotle: It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.
